Geocache Description:

FTF honors go to Fegan

This is not going to be easy and there is a lot of reference embedded within that all comes back to New Smyrna whether it is historical or weird. This cache is dedicated to history, weird events, and the author of the latter two who lives in New Smyrna. The start point is located at the above coordinates. You have to travel from there.

New Smyrna Beach was first settled in the 1700’s, when an English physician, Dr. Andrew Turnbull established the colony of “New Smyrna”. There were already Spanish missionaries in this area dating back to the 1560’s. The name “Smyrna” is attributed to Dr. Turnbull’s wife who was born in Smyrna (now Izmir), Turkey. This colony has a place in history by being the first largest single attempt by a member of the British Crown to colonize the New World. Dr. Turnbull brought in about 1,500 settlers from Smyrna, Turkey, the Greek Isles, Sicily, Mallorca, Ibiza, and Minorca to grow hemp, sugarcane, indigo, and to produce rum. This colony suffered many losses due to insect-borne diseases and raids by the natives.

Tensions also grew due to mistreatment by Dr. Turnbull. These problems causes the remaining colonists to go to St. Augustine along Old King’s Highway to inform the governor of Florida (then a British protectorate) about Dr. Turnbull’s mistreatment of them. It was not long afterward that St. Augustine and Florida was returned to the Spanish. Dr. Turnbull abandoned his colony and went to live in Charleston, South Carolina. It is on these grounds that you will find a place that Dr. Turnbull began to build his home over the ruins of what may have been an older structure abandoned by Spanish settlers. All that remains now is the foundation. Not too far you will find a circle, once the base for a water tower. From this circle you will see an old oak tree that still has a cannonball lodged in it from the Civil War.

Understanding the historical significance of this part of New Smyrna Beach, FL you now get to walk in the footsteps of an author who lives in this area. This author has written many books on Florida history and even the paranormal and the plain weird. Ask at the local library in New Smyrna for any authors of books about ghosts, Bigfoot, and UFO’s. Don’t forget to mention the fact that this author lives in this same town. One other clue is that this author wrote and produced "Henry Blackhart is Dead" and appears in it. Once you find out who the author is you will have two of his books to look for in order to get the right azimuth in degrees and the correct pace count to the next clue.

The book that will lead you to the correct azimuth in degrees should be in libraries. It is “weird” and about the state he lives in and it is this that will give you the title. The second book should also be in the local libraries as well and the title describes Florida as being “strange”. There were two of these books written with the same title but you are looking for the “second” book this author wrote of this same title. If the book is checked out of the library it makes a “Lotta Scents” to check elsewhere for it and who knows what you may find at the museum or visitors center. In the first book take the beginning pages of articles that have something to do with this area you are in and add them together. Now find the page in this book that begins the story of Ashley’s Shadow. Now read up on the fate of the young girl who was murdered and subtract her age from the total you had from adding the two pages together. This will be your aaa. Now you are probably wondering how many paces do I proceed in this particular direction. Well, like I mentioned in the beginning of this journey everything has something to do with New Smyrna in some shape or form. There is an interstate highway that is the main thoroughfare to and from the beaches of both Daytona and New Smyrna Beach. The answer to the number of paces can be found by looking in the second book about the I-4 Dead Zone and finding out when the Hawkins Homestead was taken by the government to construct I-4. This two digit year will be your bb.
You should now be in an area that tells something about the first European Settlers. Take the whole year these first settlers came to New Smyrna and add the address of City Hall and then subtract that answer from ten years prior to the year a metallic disc was seen hovering over New Smyrna Beach. This can be found in the second book under unidentified flying objects. Now subtract 30 but make your answer a two digit answer The answer to this will yield cc. This plaque also mentions a more modern date regarding the commemoration of the time these settlers arrived. Take the whole year. Hold onto that thought for now while you look in the second book about the Dead Man’s Greeting. Find out the word he wrote in blood. Take this word and make them numbers. Add each individual number (if the number has two digits add those together i.e. 1, 2, 22 would be 1+2+2+2). Add ten to that number and make it a year in the 1900’s. Take that full year you just got and subtract that from the year I told you to hold onto above. You will have your dd.
